Faith in God is the foundation of Het Kruispunt. It binds us together. But what does it actually mean?
We believe that the Bible is the means through which God speaks to all of us. In the Bible, the Lord reveals Himself to us and makes clear what His will is. In the Bible, God reveals Himself as the triune God: as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The Father is the great Creator, the Son is the Redeemer, and the Holy Spirit works out that redemption in the hearts of all God's children. The Bible is a reliable guide and gives us answers to (life's) questions and shows us how we should love and serve God.
The Apostles' Creed contains a summary of what we believe based on God's Word. This creed originated in the 2nd century AD. It reads as follows:
The beginning of the Bible tells us that God created the heavens and the earth (made out of nothing): sun, moon, stars, the earth, trees, plants, birds, fish, and finally, as the crown of creation, mankind. The purpose of creation is that everything lives to the glory of God. In the beginning, there was perfect harmony with one another: animals and humans among themselves, and humans with God (Genesis 1-2).
The first people, Adam and Eve, however, listened to the devil and disobeyed God. This caused a great separation between God and mankind. Sin aroused great anger from God. Sorrow, hardship, and even death came into the world. The Bible says that man must die as punishment for sin (Genesis 3). Not only Adam and Eve, but also all people born after them, have by nature a wrong (sinful) existence. That is why we all deserve the same punishment. The Bible speaks about this in a compelling way.
Fortunately, the Bible does not end here!
In His infinite love, God has provided a way to be saved. That way is only through Jesus Christ, God's own Son. He came to earth to restore the relationship with God for sinful people. In the New Testament, the second part of the Bible, we read about this: “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3 verse 16).
How can Jesus Christ be or become our Savior? This is possible by grace and through faith in Him. He willingly chose to bear the punishment in the place of sinners. He suffered and even died on the cross. His self-sacrifice was so great that He can remove the guilt of anyone who believes in Him. Jesus rose from the dead. He is the King who (now from heaven) reigns over this earth and cares for His believers. Whoever learns to believe in the Lord Jesus may therefore go free undeservedly and will no longer be punished for their sins. We call this "reconciliation with God." God still continues to save people. The Holy Spirit uses the proclamation of the Word for this purpose.
But the sad thing is that we are completely focused on sin. If it were up to us, we would rather continue living without God than be saved. It is therefore necessary that we acknowledge this, realize our need for reconciliation with God, and actually receive it through faith in Jesus’ payment. As thanks for the great sacrifice He made, a desire will also arise to do God’s will. This change is called “rebirth” in the Bible. A beautiful word, because it points to the fact that you are, as it were, born again. The old sinful life gives way to a new life in obedience to God. That new life means, on the one hand, fighting against all that is wrong. And on the other hand, hope and trust in God. That new life will never end. Believers will die one day, but after their death they will praise and glorify God forever in heaven. Without any lack. Sin, sorrow, and misery will then be gone forever. At the end of time, when the Gospel of Jesus Christ has been proclaimed throughout the whole world, He will return to this earth to judge all people. Whoever has believed in Him will not be lost.
Do you not consider this an important message? We mean it from the bottom of our hearts: it is a matter of life or death, of being saved or being lost. Therefore, take to heart the following exhortation from the Old Testament (the first part of the Bible): “Seek the LORD while He may be found; call upon Him while He is near. Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the LORD, and He will have mercy on him; and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon” (Isaiah 55 verses 6-7).
